Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade in a large urban school district. This is a low-income neighborhood. My students are terrific, but have very limited life experiences and few home resources. The only books many have to read are those provided by the school. My students are struggling readers but they are all trying so hard to improve. The best way to improve is to get them to read, read, read. I would like to create a class library of books in the Accelerated Reading program. These are age and grade-appropriate books that are interesting to the children but also help them improve their reading fluency, vocabulary development and comprehension. After reading a book the students take a test based specifically on each book. I need the books for them to read, a bookcase, and small prizes to reward them for their efforts. Students who earn 90 or above on their AR test would get a paper flag cutout with their name and the name of the book they have read. Our goal is to have our flags flying on the walls of every hallway in our building. I think this organized reading incentive program, the High Flying Readers, will help my students improve their reading immensely. I hope they will be so delighted with their flags and their accomplishments on the AR tests that they will keep reading and improving all year long.
