Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss
My first grade students love to read to themselves and their peers, and are becoming stronger readers everyday.
My 1st grade classroom is full of energized and eager students.
Most of my students are ESL students, and are learning to read and write in English, which is not their first language. With a population of over 800 students, 90% receive free or reduced price lunch, my students often face many challenging factors. First grade is an imperative school year, and often sets the foundation in reading and writing. It is exciting to begin the year as non-readers and end with great success.
My Project
My students and I are exploring the curriculum framework of Daily Five. This framework allows students to practice reading fluently to themselves and their peers, and allows for the teacher to meet in small groups. One of the components of Daily Five is "Read To Self". During this time, students are able to choose books on their reading level to read for a set amount of time. I would like to use these book bins to store each students' reading choices. This will allow the student to feel selective in what they are reading, but give me as the teacher, a way to control what the selections are. These organizational bins will be an awesome addition to our classroom.
Any donation to purchase these reading bins would be greatly appreciated.
Funding is low, often times non-existent in my large urban school district. Any improvements to my classroom will continue to make my room a warm and safe place for my students to learn.
