Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in a Fourth/Fifth grade, self-contained, special education classroom in a high poverty neighborhood in the South Bronx.
The students have been classified learning disabled or speech impaired.
Many of the students are English Language Learners, and all are performing several years below grade level in all subject areas. While the students and the school face many of the challenges that seem to come with a high poverty neighborhood, the students are happy, motivated, and the school does a great job, under the circumstances of creating a safe, comfortable haven in the midst of periodic violence and chaos.
My Project
The energy the students in my class have is probably equal to 10 cups of coffee daily - which is great! Their energy and enthusiasm helps make learning fun! However, during more quiet or focused activities, they need a way to channel this energy to maintain focus and productivity. That's where the items in this project come in!
The ultimate goal is for students to learn ways to self-regulate and these items will help them begin this process.
The Bouncy Bands and tactile chair pads will be used to help students maintain focus while doing quiet activities at their desks such as writing or silent reading. The fidgets will be used by the students on an as-needed basis to help maintain focus on group lessons or read-alouds.
All of these items are designed, and will be used, as a way to channel their energy without taking focus away from the lessons and learning.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
