My Students

Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun." As an art teacher, I am in the business of helping young artists develop both creativity and intelligence, a task that sometimes requires similar resources to that of a traditional classroom.

My 700+ kindergarten through 8th grade students, largely first and second generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's Art program for many years.

Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students creativity blossom. Despite being run out of a lunchroom, our 4 year old Art program has seen fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school are covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. Each year culminates with a school wide art gallery, and sees students represented in district wide art shows, and entries into the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

My Project

Imagine an excited and driven young artist. The artist has a plan for an art project but cant quite figure our how to draw the main subject accurately. This artist's neighbor is working on a shading skill sheet but can't quite figure out how to blend his values smoothly. Across the room a diverse learner has completed his task and needs direct instruction before moving on. And I, the teacher, have 3 students waiting for me to discuss progress on their pieces.

My middle school students participate in an independent studio art class.

This means that 30 students are working on 30 different things at all times. The resources I have requested will help all students work more independently.

The student struggling with accuracy can use a computer to search for a resource image online, and then (using the class printer and ink) print it to use as a reference. At the same time the artist stuck on his skill builder can use the other laptop to access and watch a demonstration video walking him through the task. The diverse learner can pull out his sketchbook to work while waiting for his direction. All of this can be taking place while I as the teacher am conferencing additional students

Albert Einstein knew the arts are an essential part of a well rounded education. By funding this project you are helping ensure each of our artists receives the high quality, visual arts education they deserve no matter their background, income, or zip code.
