High Altitude Balloon: Weather or Not, That Is the Question.
Help me give my students an opportunity to send something into near space.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Engaging students in science is often a challenge. I have tried integrating interesting visuals and hands-on projects. I have tried contextualizing science in terms of the things that students find interesting (college, career, hobbies, pop culture, etc.). Despite these efforts, I still find it difficult to inspire all our learners.
This past summer, I took a risk: I challenged our school's robotics team to send a high-altitude balloon into near space with a message for the world.
They accepted the challenge, and now I am doing my part, which is acquiring the project materials. As a team, we decided the theme of our high-altitude balloon project would be "We Rise and Fall Together."
My robotics team wants to send a message of peace on Earth. Initially, they were afraid of being political, with all the conflicts currently going on. I told them that peace should not be political. Together, we decided that we would send a message by taking notes, submitted from our school community and written on pieces of paper, and sealing them inside our payload capsule, along with our telemeters. Then, we would send our weather balloon and payload over 100,000 feet into the sky, track its movement, and then recover it intact to analyze the data.
Of course, we would clear everything with the Federal Aviation Agency and ensure that we release the balloon ONLY once we have understood local weather patterns and predicted the payload's path and landing site.
