Imagine if you had to sit in one spot all day to work. In a typical day, my kids and I work for 4 hours straight studying these subjects without a break since our lunch period is late in the day. These students need to move around!
My 2nd graders are a hardworking group of eager readers, writers, and mathematicians.
They come into school every day with smiles on their faces, and I work very hard to keep them there. We are in a middle to lower class neighborhood with many immigrant families who have learned English as their second language. My school is a welcoming environment for everyone -- parents, students, and teachers alike.
My Project
My students spend 4 periods a day straight learning. We have no breaks in between -- our preps are either early or late in the day and we have the latest lunch period possible -- so the children and I spend a lot of time together without leaving the classroom.
I try to keep them moving to keep their energy up. I move them to different parts of the room to utilize different materials and learn different skills and strategies, but there's only so much we can do.
When I bring them to the carpet or the smart board, sometimes I need them to bring their workbooks or their writing pieces. This becomes an issue because they need something to lean on, and books and folders just don't cut it.
My kids need lap desks. A comfortable student is a confident student!
I pride myself on having my children see their classroom as a home away from home.
This tiny addition will make all the difference in their comfort level and their ability to work, learn, and thrive.
