This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in Brownsville, Brooklyn where there is poverty and murder taking over the community. Even so, my students walk into my classroom everyday, full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day in ELA.
Everyday, I ensure to ask, "Who are we?" and they respond, "We are Brownsville Brilliance!" That is what they are, brilliant.
Despite being surrounded by violence and poverty, my students are eager to do their best, in order to become successful career-minded individuals.
My Project
Scholars need this Hidden Figures book in order to understand the greatness that these women were able to accomplish throughout a time period where women and Black Americans were seen as second-class citizens. After learning about Henrietta Lacks, and Katherine Johnson, my scholars will be empowered by their remarkable stories and all they have been able to accomplish throughout their time period. By reading this book, scholars will feel invigorated and encouraged to accomplish great things, similar to these women. My scholars were lucky enough to actually watch the Hidden Figures movie; however, it is time that they actually get their own copy of the book!
