This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my reading intervention class, a major need for all of my students is simple: read! To best support my students in practicing the word-decoding and comprehension skills that we have been learning in class, we need books that are not too difficult. That way, they can read fluently while pausing occasionally to work through a new word, rather than get overwhelmed by a string of "big words" and revert to habits like guessing or skipping them.

These "hi-lo" books are ideal for older students who are behind on reading skills because the themes are relevant to young adults, while the reading level is appropriate to their current skills.

Meanwhile, of course, my co-teacher and I are also supporting our students on tackling chunks of grade-level text...but outside of that, they need to read—on their own, with partners, or to us—and a lot!

The books I have selected are focused on life/work skills, as well as sports since that is a dominant life interest many students enjoy outside of the classroom. Please help me get my students reading and learning about the world!
