This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I’m a middle school English Language (EL) teacher that primarily works with our EL students that have been in the country less than six years and are still working on acquiring English as their second language. These students bring a wealth of prior experiences from other countries, but it is often difficult for them to find books to read that are at their independent level and are interesting and engaging. In middle school, most of the reading in the core content areas is written at higher levels than my EL students have yet reached. They need books that they want to and can read to practice and improve their reading skills so that they will be able to begin accessing the texts necessary for them to succeed in all their classes.
The addition of the books to my classroom library that I’ve selected will appeal to middle school students and are written at levels that they can access as they work towards higher literacy levels.
The books in the sports collection will appeal to both boys and girls. The focus on females selections feature inspiring women and strong female protagonists that will illuminate challenges and successes of the characters and how their perseverance pays off. Considering that these sets include both fiction and non-fiction books, they will be used to teach a variety of literary strategies, devices, skills, and features.
I will be pairing a non-fiction text with a fictional selection to teach strategies that can be used with each genre. Additionally I will have students read self-chosen books and select from a variety of activities to share the books they read.
