My Students

Not a day goes by that I am not reading at least a handful of books to my preschool students. We begin our day with a read aloud and end our day with one. I want to instill a love of reading in my students by the end of the school year, and not to mention a sense of organization.

My students live in our nation's capital and live in one of the most violent communities there.

Our school is the students' oasis in their violent community. It is a place where they can come and feel safe and know there are people there who love and care about them, even when they arrive 2 hours before school starts because their parent/guardian had somewhere to be. Despite being labeled as one of the District's lowest 40 preforming schools, we are well on our way out of the bottom 40. One of the reasons is because of our strong Early Childhood Program, which works endlessly to build early literacy skills in students so they score proficient on the assessments they will take in kindergarten and beyond.

My Project

Like most children, they all have favorite books they like to read. Mine as a child was "I'll Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch and Sheila McGraw. However, due to the lack of storage and organizational materials we have, my students and I often have trouble finding our favorite books because they are not well organized. The big book storage rack would allow for our big books to be organized and accessible to students to easily find. The book bins will also allow for us to organize our Buddy Reading Books into theme based bins and make it easy to find our favorite. Right now our big books are stacked on a shelf, making it almost impossible to find our favorite ones if they moved to the bottom. (Not to mention, the ones on the bottom don't get a chance to be favorites because it's so much work to get them out.) And our Buddy Reading Books are in milk carts that make it impossible to easily see what books are there.

This project will make a difference in my students' lives my allowing them to access the books they love with little difficulty.

It will also teach them how being well organized will make it easier for them to find books they love. Being able to reread this favorite books will help them to build the early literacy skills they need to succeed as proficient readers.
