Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nystrom Elementary School is a Year 4 Program Improvement School according to the new No Child Left Behind legislation. I am all for not leaving any child behind but funding is another story all together. Funding and resources are scarce in an already severely economically disadvantaged community. What the state doesn't realize is that Nystrom is a necessary institution in the city voted Most Dangerous in California in 2004. 100% of our population receives free lunch and new immigrants in our community look to us to provide a better future for their children. Needless to say, we are in a desperate situation.
I just started teaching a unit in Open Court Reading called "From Mystery to Medicine". This is a fourth grade class that has no idea what is going on inside of their body. We are being so pressured by the standards that we are forgetting that students sometimes need to slow down and experience some things in a more hands-on way.
The students in my class could truly benefit from a model of the interior of a human body. They know that they have internal organs, some of them even know their names. Almost none of the students know where they are located or what they do. I think that it is sad that we have forgotten to show them what all of the terminology means. We are just spoon feeding the children terms without any concrete root in knowledge yet still expecting them to really learn. Strange, isn't it?
