My students need to see themselves represented in literature. As a diverse group of ELL students, we need books that relate to our own families, traditions, and journeys.
I get to experience new cultures and traditions without ever leaving my classroom! We are a beautifully diverse group of English language learners! In our class, we have quite a few countries and languages represented, including Spanish, French, Karen, Burmese, Bosnian, Marshallese, Swahili and more.
Every day, my linguistically diverse students work hard to thrive in an English-only environment.
My students are amazing learners and I believe they will do great things if they are given the tools they need to succeed!
My Project
My students and their families come from many different parts of the world. Currently, our classroom library does not have diverse books for each of them to feel represented.
All students deserve the opportunity to "see themselves" in the books they read.
I have selected books recommended by speakers from the national TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference that showcase each of the cultures represented in our classroom.
It is my hope that by providing these culturally-rich books, my students will not only be able to see themselves in these stories, but also grow in their love of reading and maybe even be inspired to write down their own stories as well!
