This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I NYC school. Title I schools are in high need areas. The students at my school face many struggles both inside and outside of the classroom, yet they are resilient and eager to learn. As an Occupational Therapist (OT), I service students with special needs ranging from autism spectrum disorder to ADHD, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, and learning disabilities. This project was created to help our students cope with their emotional, physical, motor, and sensory needs. My goal is to provide students with the resources they need to enhance their participation and independence throughout the school environment.
My Project
These materials will have a huge impact on my students' ability to develop their skills and learn. I noticed that many of my students were unable to fully participate in virtual instruction the last spring because they did not have basic school supplies at home. If we do return to school using a hybrid model (days on and off); each student will have their own box and will be able to use the materials in these boxes without cross-contamination. For example, Playlearn Therapy Putty is important in the development of hand strength and manipulation; which is needed in all academic tasks.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
