My Students

"When words fail, music speaks." -Hans Christian Andersen Giving my students a voice through music has been one of my greatest joys. My students are producing music that they never imagined that they'd be able to create. Their feeling of accomplishment is tangible!

My students are an extremely bright, rhythmic, and musical group, born in a neighborhood of high poverty and gang rivalries.

100% of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. No lunch tickets necessary-we feed any student who comes through our doors! For some of the students, our hot lunch is the only hot meal they will eat until the following school day.

My Project

I am currently trying to get students to feel comfortable with improvising and creating their own melodies and rhythms. I want to teach them to accompany a musical group on the tubano drums. I also want them to express themselves through dance, while I play rhythms on the tubano.

Donations to this project would eventually see more creative, confident children.

I would teach the students to play certain rhythms, and while they were drumming other students would be dancing to the rhythms. It would be a very musical and rewarding experience for my students to see how their improvised rhythms could affect other people and make them want to move.
