As supporters of lifelong learning, our preschool and pre-kindergarten staff serve three to five-year-old children on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Many of our families live in poverty and fifty-nine percent of our children receive special education services.
We know students need books that reflect their race, ethnic and special needs.
This will give them an edge in their learning since reading is so important to lifelong learning.
Our children come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Our staff works hard to provide a variety of learning opportunities for our children throughout the year to continually support families in many ways. Many of our families work in low-income jobs.
My Project
Reading to preschoolers is a first step to lifelong learning. Out teachers love to read books, to help our students, start this journey and need new books for our library. The library was started years ago and many of the books don't reflect the current diversity of our school. Our students and their families, come from 26 different countries. 59% of our students receive special education services and many of our current books are too advanced to keep their attention.
New books at schools, are crucial for our students to access appropriate books as they start their lifelong journey to reading on their own.
I am asking for donations for new, more diverse and updated books for our library. Books, which reflect, who the students are and their special needs. Over 3/4 of our students are part of low income families who don't always have transportation to a public library or have few books at home. Our teachers read to our 3,4, & 5 year old students every day and want these books to inspire them, to want to listen and enjoy reading.
More than half of students from low‑income households
