My Students

I teach advanced English to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.

My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.

They want to make their mark in the world, and it's my job to prepare them.

My Project

"Hey, Kiddo" is a graphic novel that illuminates the struggles of a young boy whose family is not picture perfect. Jarrett Krosoczka's mother is addicted to drugs. When Jarrett is just three years old, his mother "goes away" and Jarrett moves in with his grandparents.

I would like to use "Hey, Kiddo" as the focus text for a lunch time, book circle.

I will invite up to 25 students to discuss the issues raised in the book including: difficult family relationships, addiction and rejection. Students will keep the books.

I'll use the cookies for my classroom snack box. I don't know how much time you've spent around teenagers, but they eat all the time. I make the snacks available to any student regardless of whether or not they are in my class.

Discussing a book and sharing a meal will help us to build our community of readers and thinkers. This entire project is voluntary and open to all students. Thank you for making this event possible.
