I teach 6th and 7th grade gifted and talented students who are very excited about learning and are hungry to push themselves to the limit.
Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian, Marshallese: These ethnicities make up the diverse culture of my classroom, and what a colorful class of heroes I have!
These amazing students are our future. They are scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs, teachers, and politicians in training. Many of them take their schooling very seriously and are a daily inspiration to me. They are well-rounded individuals who are not afraid to take risks and understand the importance of perseverance in the face of challenge. They are eager learners who only want to be the best versions of themselves, and as their teacher, I take my responsibility of providing authentic learning experiences for them very seriously.
My Project
This project will make a difference in my students' lives by allowing them to develop skills in decision-making, entrepreneurship, innovation and strategic thinking to develop a business. Students will be starting a school-based apparel business and would benefit from the startup supplies. Decision-making skills will be honed using both cost/benefit analysis and the PACED Decision Making Model.
Entrepreneurship is an invaluable skill that students from all backgrounds can use to improve their lives, whether it be students from low socioeconomic backgrounds or students who want to use their abilities to improve their community.
This project will give students the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship by developing a business. Students will use the decision-making skills, entrepreneurship experiences, and creative thinking to create a variety of designs for items such as t-shirts, caps, and mugs. Groups will develop a business plan, prepare an “elevator pitch” for potential investors, create a marketing plan, and produce a prototype of their shirts.
The Cricut Explore will allow students to create designs and cut them on vinyl for their apparel. The heat press will allow students to use both vinyl and sublimation paper to transfer their designs to items such as t-shirts and mugs. These supplies will allow students to create high-quality apparel done "in-house" for all school clubs and organizations at a reasonable cost, and these skill sets will provide students with a marketable trade.
