Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a diverse urban high school with over 2,000 students. Most of our students live at, or below, the poverty line and face challenges most adults would find difficult to overcome. As such, it is out of the question to ask students to purchase a paperback book. As is the case with most of my colleagues, I spend a considerable amount of my own money to purchase classroom supplies; therefore, would really appreciate a little help!
My class needs to read how nine brave high school students stood up to racism and injustice to change this nation by integrating Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
I would like to purchase sixty (60) copies of Warriors Don't Cry, a book written by Melba Pattillo Beals, about her experience as one of the Little Rock Nine. This will enable all of my honors students to read the book at the same time, without having to share, or being limited to reading during classroom time. Not only will students learn about an important historical event, but will discover how individuals can bring about change.
My Project
Many students do not see the value of studying history as it happened so long ago! Accordingly, my students need interesting literary material with opportunities to make real world connections. This book, Warriors Don't Cry, about a high school experience, will provide such moments as many of my students will see themselves in the author, as she comes face to face with racism.
Reading Warriors Don't Cry will not only enhance students' understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, but will provide opportunities to teach empathy.
Valuable classroom discussions will center around the struggles faced by the Little Rock Nine, as well as the dangers of remaining silent when witnessing injustice.
