This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students attend a Title One school in Brooklyn, New York. They are a very diverse group of children from many cultures. My students are living in high poverty from low, socio-economic backgrounds.

My students are eager, enthusiastic and extremely interested in finding out how things work.

During science, my students are always asking, "How?" and "Why?" Hands-on activities allow my students to learn, develop concepts and appreciate science, engineering and math education. They have the desire to learn and succeed, but they need the materials to achieve.

My Project

My students will investigate the optimum conditions for hermit crabs. They will conduct several investigations including observations with scientific inquiry tools, animal food preferences, and light vs. dark conditions. Students will also learn how to care and maintain a hermit crab environment.

Providing funding for these materials will give my students the opportunity to really act and work like scientists and develop responsibility for caring for living organisms.

These materials will provide my students with the ability to explore animal habitats and the conditions needed in order to thrive. Students will also conduct hermit crab races to test for speed and distance.
