Heritage Literature

My Students

My students are hard-working and creative, focused on being leaders and learners! Nearly 80% of our school receives free and reduced lunches, making us a high-poverty school. We are located in a working class, low-income, diverse urban area, just on the outskirts of a major metro area.

Despite the challenges that many of our students come to school with, they are dedicated students and incredibly hard workers!

I am so excited to help bring literature into their hands that is current and represents who they are!

My Project

I have a class that includes many ELL students, approximately 2/3 of the class! Most are of Hispanic heritage, and I desperately would like literature that represents their culture and identity!

As a teacher, I know how important it is for my students to see themselves in the materials and literature they use.

Finding literature sets for reading groups that represent the Hispanic culture is a challenge and our school is still working on building this resource.

I am excited to bring literature such as "Diego" and "Return to Sender" into my students' hands that will allow them to read about their personal culture and history. We also use a great deal of technology and computer-based programs to support English learning. This often requires the use of headphones with computers.
