Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I public school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Seven out of my 18 students are English language learners. Some of the students live under stressful circumstances and come from low income families. Their parents are immigrants so they are trying to adjust to a new culture and they also do not speak English. Some of these children have no parental figures, and others must care for their younger siblings. Seven of my students came into my classroom with no background knowledge. In spite of their circumstances, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school!
My Project
The reading activities will enhance early comprehension of literature and informational text. My kindergarteners will practice skills such as identifying characters, setting, main idea, main topic, and facts. Some students can read, but they do not understand what they are reading.
The donations for this project will help my students create a foundation for reading comprehension.
These skills will help my students in other subject areas such as, writing, social studies, science, and math.
First, I will model how to use the comprehension activity programs in whole group lessons, then, in guided reading lessons. Later on, the students will be able to use the materials independently in the listening center. After completing their activity card, they will check their partner's answers. Besides improving their comprehension skills, my students build their communication, collaboration, and deepen their knowledge.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
