Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I support 52 students who need targeted, systematic literacy instruction in order to accelerate their reading abilities. It is extremely rewarding to see their progress as they learn to decode and make meaning of what they are reading.

In a highly digital world, sometimes returning to the basic print materials to support students' fluency; in fact there is growing research claiming that using print material and having students annotate it exercises the muscles in the brain which is why having fluency passages printed is beneficial for my students' literacy journey.

Each week their informal assessments are proudly displayed on a bulletin board to chart their progress as they become fluent readers. The ink would be a gift as our industrial copiers at the school site have a quota set and they are often needing repair or toner. Students' progress is monitored weekly using decodable passages with the target sound for that week. By having students be a part of this progress monitoring empowers them to want to continue experiencing this success.
