My students need the storage shed to put tools, work gloves, water hoses and garden tools in. We are currently storing them in an old shower in the girls' locker room.
Twenty three eager seventh and eighth graders rush into the health room excited to learn different ways to live a healthier life. Its a quick hello to me as they put their personal items away and head to the locker room to change clothes. It is hot and humid out but it doesn't slow them down. They don't mind getting a little dirty to reach their goals. They work cooperatively together in small groups as they learn about healthy foods and how to grow some of their own food.
"We ate cucumbers from the garden and they were so good," I heard one say to another student.
Every day they race to see what has changed in the garden. They are proud of what they have accomplished and eager to learn more! For most its the first time they have worked in a garden or grown anything. Many are from low income families and several have learning difficulties. Several of our students are from military families and move around a lot, so gardening is something new to most.
My Project
Students will have more time to work in the garden if we have a storage building close to the garden area. Taking the tools in and out of the girls locker room (showers) is inconvenient and time consuming. It also brings dirt and other unwanted material into the gym.
Having a garden storage shed will reduce the amount of dirt brought into the gym by the garden tools and allow students more time to work in the garden.
Other classes pass by the garden on the way to the gym and enjoy seeing the changes. Having a shed to put the water hoses and tools in will add to the beauty of the garden. The storage shed will also help teach students how to properly take care of the equipment.
