My students need replanting materials for their Earthbox Gardens, a digital camera to document the garden growth, and a refrigerator/freezer to preserve the vegetables.
I still remember gardening with my mother, and feeling the soil sift through my fingers. Children today don't typically grow up experiencing anything in the garden, or have much knowledge of energy conservation and their impact on the environment.
My third grade classroom is a tapestry of learners from varying socio-economic backgrounds and ability levels.
The classroom is comprised of students from military families, students with learning disabilities, and intellectually gifted students. They attend a school in a high-poverty level, rural community. All these factors combine to make our classroom community very unique.
My Project
The Earthbox resources will enable my students to reuse garden kits that we currently have in our classroom. We will discuss conserving materials by reusing and recycling. After they replant the gardens, the students will learn how to use the digital camera to document the plant growth and what they're learning. Throughout the project the students will also learn various organic gardening techniques and more about conserving the natural resources around them. Then, when the gardens mature, the students will be able to preserve their fruits and vegetables in the classroom refrigerator until we prepare some healthy classroom snacks. As a culminating activity, the students will be able to create a photo slide show on the classroom computers to share what they've learned and experienced about gardening and conservation. I hope that this project will help them realize that not only can they make a difference in the world around them, but they too can help FEED the USA, starting in their own backyard.
This project has the potential to teach my students a wealth of information about so many topics, including how to grow their own food and more about conserving our natural resources.
With an opportunity to do so much, how can you say no? Thank you so much for your generous support!
