My Students

Here we go Loop Dee Loo, Here we go Loop Dee Li. My fourth grade students and I are looping up to 5th grade together. We are pretty excited about it and hope you will help us to continue to grow.

My twenty-four fourth grade students have many needs.

No two students are alike. Some read well above grade level and some read well below. Even so, they all enjoy learning about the world around them. They have dreams and hopes. We have become a family this year and we are lucky to have the chance to stay together as we take on fifth grade. The majority of these students receive free or reduced priced lunch. Therefore, asking parents or guardians to absorb the cost of anything beyond the very basic classroom supplies is out of the question. As 5th graders, my students will have their first opportunity to participate in a formal instrumental class. Strings are introduced in our district to any 5th grade student who is fortunate enough to have the ability to provide their own instrument. Sadly, most of my students will miss the opportunity simply because there are not enough instruments to loan to the children whose families cannot provide their own.

My Project

Research has shown significant correlations among reading music/playing an instrument and mathematics achievement. I believe that these children will benefit greatly from the opportunity to participate in our strings program. I would love to see my entire class of 24 students participate in the program. Of course, not every child is musically inclined. For those who are, however, having an instrument to play is absolutely vital. As the year progresses, strings students move from learning the basic strings and how to pluck them to using the bow and more complex fingerings. By the middle of the year, they are ready to perform some simple tunes at our winter concert and near the end of the year they gather with hundreds of other 5th grade students for the spring festival where they perform several numbers. It is truly an amazing process!

The 4 violins requested will allow 4 more students an opportunity to participate in the strings program at our school.

That means 4 more children who don't feel left out once again just because their families are struggling to get by. It also means 4 more students who might choose to pursue the arts in middle and high school and 4 more children whose academics could improve by tapping into their musical abilities. Please help make our hopes a reality.
