HEPA Air Purifiers

My Students

I work at a public high school in San Francisco and teach Social Studies classes and English Language Learners who are usually recent immigrants to the U.S. My students are very motivated to improve their English skills and diligently persevere in their educational goals.

Because I teach mostly 10th-grade students, this will be the first time they have stepped foot in the school building!

Their 9th-grade year was entirely virtual.

I am working especially hard this year to make our classroom a space they feel is safe (clean, disinfected, with fresh air) and welcoming.

My Project

This was the first week of in-person learning for my students since March 2020. To help students feel more at ease around so many people, I'd like to equip my classroom with HEPA air purifiers. Currently, district policies require us to maximize air circulation in our classrooms by keeping all windows open. However, we will not be able to keep windows open if/when the air quality declines from wildfire smoke and other pollutants.

I would like to protect my students from COVID-19, wildfire smoke, and pollutants that trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.

HEPA air purifiers can eliminate over 99% of tiny particles in a classroom, which will benefit students even after the coronavirus threat has subsided (Green). I plan to fundraise in the future for air filter replacements so that I can continue keeping the air clean and healthy for my students each school year.

After comparing many different types of HEPA air purifiers and reading about their effectiveness in large areas with the square footage of my classroom, I believe that two Coway Mighty purifiers will best serve my students (each purifier is designed to accommodate room sizes up to 361 sq.ft.)
