This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title One school in Brooklyn, New York. They are a very diverse group of children from many cultures. My students are living in high poverty from low, socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students are eager, enthusiastic and extremely interested in finding out how things work.
During science, my students are always asking, "How?" and "Why?" Hands-on activities allow my students to learn, develop concepts and appreciate science, engineering and math education. They have the desire to learn and succeed, but they need the materials to achieve.
My Project
Replacement equipment and food pellets are needed to maintain our class pet, Henry the turtle. Students will investigate optimum conditions for our turtle. They will conduct several investigations including observations with scientific inquiry tools, animal food preferences, light vs. dark conditions, habitat design, life cycles and life span.
These materials will provide my students with the ability to maintain, observe and explore our turtle habitat and the conditions needed in order for our science lab pets to thrive.
It will also give my students the opportunity to learn very important responsibilities including keeping our pet safe, caring for live organisms, responsibility and maintaining healthy habitats.
