My Students

#Kidsdeserveit- Our elementary houses 360 of the best kindergarteners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders. My school is a Title I school in Clinton, Missouri. It is a school-wide Title I school based on the percentage of students on free/reduced-price lunch. This is a federally funded program used to reduce class size and ensure appropriate resources are available to each student.

They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions.

Our school is not a stranger to finding our way around challenges. Almost 70% of our students receive free and reduced lunch and over 50% of our students received Title I reading services last year for being below grade-level. We implemented school-wide Orton Gillingham Phonics to help with readers. We have a community Bright Futures Program where individuals and businesses volunteer and adopt classrooms and schools to help get our community involved. We run a Positive Behavior Intervention Strategy program. Our school created a “Cardi Cafe” which is a kitchen classroom. Our students come to school to be loved and we love the heck out of them. If anyone deserves it, they do.

My Project

Imagine walking into a room dedicated to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). One wall will be filled with bins of legos, magnetic tiles, straws and connectors, tinker toys, puzzles, and many other great building toys. The other wall will house iPads, robots, circuit boards, Chromebooks, a 3-D printer, and coding activities to help students learn and discover. The other corner will be a creativity corner where student’s minds can run wild with ideas. We will have drawers filled with colored duct tape, hot glue, containers, pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, cardboard, paint, markers, yarn, buttons, popsicle sticks, and anything else which could be used to create. The final part of the room will be used under extreme adult supervision. It will give the students the opportunity to use hammers, nails, and wood to help build and create. This will be utilized by our behavioral specialist to give students a constructive way to release frustrations and as a reward for good behavior. The possibilities for this room are endless and will prepare our students for the future in ways we may never know. Our school NEEDS this space. But we also need funds to gather the supplies, technology, building materials, and storage.

I wouldn’t change our students for the world.

But I am going to try my best to change the world for my students.
