Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a public high school located in Milwaukee, WI. Our students and staff are very diverse, speaking twenty different languages and are originally from thirty different countries. My students value and appreciate their creative learning experiences, and are very interested in many forms of art, music, and expression. In my art classroom, we work to build communication skills, explore our histories and identities, and to further learn about the diversities in our world. Our school currently has about 900 students enrolled with 28% of students that have a disability, 51% of students that are English language learners, and many are students that are at an economic disadvantage. Access to quality supplies and materials will only enhance the wonderful projects our students create.
My Project
These classroom supplies were specifically requested by my current group of students. At the start of second semester we usually dive into a few cultural arts based lessons, and with some of the students at our school already practicing henna tattoos, many of my students are curious about their history, significance, and how to create them. I am very excited for my students’ engagement and relevant learning that will happen throughout this lesson. This lesson will go beyond the art classroom, help them learn how to work collaboratively, and to be aware of cultural traditions around the world.
I am working hard to create a classroom that will motivate students to explore, discover, and create.
Every supply in the classroom is a new opportunity for my students to discover something that they are successful at, and something that they love! Our classroom supplies are the tools of our expression and help my students communicate their identities, dreams, and personal stories.
We will be using henna tattoos to kick off our very first project of the second semester, where students will learn about art in various cultures around the world.
