Helping The Children Of Deployed Military Personnel

My students need 5 copies of "Bullying in Schools" and 15 books about the branches of the Armed Services.

My Students

Did you know that children of deployed military personnel are more prone to being either bullies or being bullied than other children? We need to reduce anxiety, develop coping skills and improve self esteem in all our students but we need to concentrate on our military children.

My school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.

My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Our stable neighborhood is changing. 18.4% of the families receive supplemental Social Security income or public assistance. Over half of my students qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in ELL programs Although they represent the very best in America, many of my military students suffer from low self esteem. We have problems with bullying on the playground and teasing and name calling in the classroom. We need to change the climate in our classroom. We all need to learn about what military parents do for a living and we need to celebrate the honor, privileges and sacrifices of military families everywhere.

My Project

I work with a very special group of students who are the dependents of deployed military personnel. They are under special stress and they deserve our support. Some are bullied because they are military brats and some strike out against other students because they feel different and don't understand why they feel that way. I need some books on topics that will help all my students understand what some parents do for a living. I want to develop a reading club for 4th and 5th graders which uses lessons in Bullying in Schools and also explores the branches of the Armed Services and the sacrifices of military families everywhere. Our library does not have any books that were published in the 21st century on the military. We need help.

A recent RAND study titled Children on the Home front: The Experience of Children from Military Families, found that military children were frequently either bullies or bullied because peers did not understand what it meant to be on active service in the military.

I want to create a book club to reduce stress and improve self esteem while building a knowledge base about the Armed Services. I desperately need new books to help my students.
