Helping Students With Disabilities Become Successful Learners
Help me give my students food when they are hungry, adaptive seating and fidgets to maintain focus, prizes for reaching their goals, games for reinforcing their learning, and social skills to help them become productive members of society.
All of my students are not only from low-income households, but they also have disabilities. In addition, many experienced (and some continue to experience) trauma in their daily lives. But, they do not give up and battle to overcome all of these factors in their daily lives. My students are 3rd-6th grade students in special education who have been heavily impacted by the pandemic, as if their lives were not already stressful enough.
Despite all of these hardships, my students work incredibly hard to improve their skills and be successful.
My Project
The resources I have requested will help not only their academic needs, but their social-emotional needs. Many of my students struggle with on-task behavior. Fidgets, alternate seating, a mini-trampoline and a calm down chair will help my kiddos regroup when they are struggling with their emotions, or struggling to keep working.
Many of my students not only have a disability, but they come from trauma backgrounds, extreme poverty, food insecurity and Covid has exacerbated their delays.
Simple things like snacks when they are hungry, or rewards for hard work and meeting academic or behavioral goals will help them be able to focus on learning and not the stressors in their lives. Additionally, games and activities are a fun way to break up the monotony of learning.
My students deserve the best of the best and I work hard everyday to provide them with a calm, stable environment. Basic supplies, such as the binders or colored pencils, often come from my own pocket. Receiving this grant would be a huge weight off my shoulders and provide me with additional supplies and curriculum to pull from.
