This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a title 1 school located on the south side of Chicago. Approximately 97% of the students qualify for free lunch. When I started working at this school eight years ago, the school was being turned around after threats of closing due to low performance. As the new teachers came in and worked with the students, we moved from being a failing school to a level 1+ school, which is the highest rating given by Chicago Public Schools. Grades, scores, and attendance have gone up and students push themselves to be more.

Eight years ago, my students were failed by a system that was falling apart, and now, eight years later, they have moved mountains to clear their own path forward.

However, there is still so much more that my students need. They strive to be more and with the support of the school, their families, and the community, we hope to continue to help them grow and reach the futures they desire.

My Project

According to the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention, 26% of children in the United States will witness or experience a traumatic event before they turn four.

The students I work with live in a community filled with gang violence, substance abuse, and poverty.

Many of my students have lost a loved one due to gun violence or incarceration. When these traumatic events impact their lives, it is hard for them to focus in the classroom which effects their academic abilities. Furthermore, students do not have the skills necessary to cope with the trauma and build resilience.

Our school has one shared social worker who is only at our school three days a week and we have a counselor who has additional responsibilities outside of counseling. Although they both work very hard to provide support to our students, some students' needs are left behind.

Through this professional development, I hope to learn new strategies, skills, and interventions to better support my students. As the social-emotional teacher, I help students learn how to better manage their emotions and social interactions, but there is still more work to be done. This project will help fund the cost of the two days of professional development as well as the cost of four books from the seminars I will be attending at the event.
