Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What can we do to encourage reading for readers who have not seen success in the past? Provide them with low level high interest books! I am a special education teacher in the South Bronx. I teach 12 middle school students in my self-contained classroom. I have seen a lot of reading growth this year, but I am lacking one crucial thing in my classroom... books that my students CAN and WANT to read. Most of my students are reading on a 2nd to 5th grade reading level. My 12 year old students have no interest in reading books about puppy dogs and imaginary cartoon characters. They want to read about real life issues, but their reading levels hold them back. I often notice my students picking up books that are way too difficult for them just to avoid ridicule and judgment from their peers.
During a graduate school class I heard about the Orca Book Publishers. They produce a series called Orca Currents and another called Orca Soundings. These are books about adolescent issues that are on a 2nd to 5th grade reading level. I am extremely enthusiastic about adding these books to my classroom library. I think that it will motivate my students to become better readers.
I know that my students would be thrilled to finally read something of interest to them. It will help them to actually enjoy reading instead of just seeing it as a chore!
