Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a social worker who teaches a monthly parenting group for parents with students in special education. Each month we focus on a different topic that will help each parent aid in bettering their child's education. The topic for January is "Helping Your Child Learn to Read." A reading specialist will be teaching parents different strategies that they can use at home, and we'd like to give them a hand with supplying a few books to each parent.
My students come from a poverty-stricken area, where there is a lot of gang and domestic violence. Their parents and siblings may use drugs, and my students are often left unsupervised at home.
I am trying to better the situation for these children by minimizing one of the obstacles that they face daily. For many of my students, education is something they face alone. They don't get any help at home, and to top it off, they have a disability. Educating their parents on how to help with homework and learning how to read is something that I have taken on. Many of these parents cannot read themselves.
It is imperative that these parents aid their children in learning to read. It is crucial to their own child's education that they become involved in their school activities, especially for students who are dealing with a disability. It will be easier for their parents to carry out the responsibility of putting themselves in charge of their child's education if they have the tools they need.
