Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the brand new librarian here, and am delighting in getting to know our students. I am most impressed by the diversity of the students and staff, and the amazing, safe, supportive family they have created here.
Almost two thirds of our school family are classified as economically disadvantaged, and almost half of them are English Language Learners, but here, they are simply sweet, caring children, ready to soak up knowledge.
Even if they come into a classroom a little jaded, they are easily won over with acceptance and a new activity.
As economically disadvantaged students, our children have fewer opportunities to experience new an alternative ways of learning. In our ever-changing world, this lack of opportunity can put our students at a disadvantage in a future job market. In addition to maintaining the caring, family atmosphere at our school, it is our job to prepare them for an amazing future. We must provide them with experiences that will assure them, as we already know, that they are just as capable of excelling as any other students.
My Project
The library I inherited was a wonderful place where reading was celebrated. The teachers and students were inspired to reach the highest levels of reading appreciation and success. I want to support this love of reading, while also updating our library to encourage students to discover new experiences in different ways. I believe my job as a librarian is to teach children to explore and discover information in ways that excite them about learning.
Students creating with marble runs and Beebots are innovative and collaborative in amazing ways.
They work together with marble runs to build higher, and solve problems of structure and motion. Beebots also inspire creativity, collaboration, and problem solving while introducing coding. Children learn coding in a tactile way that firms concepts in young minds. The library provides a place where students are free to explore with these tools without fear of getting a wrong answer.
My program will incorporate activities with using STEAM activities with books students will love. Students will learn to view reading as a gateway to fun, new experiences, and to skills they may not have the opportunity to learn any other way.
