Helping Newcomers Feel Welcome, Safe and Cared For

Help me give my students items that will help them feel extra safe and cared for while they are at school - menstrual pads, locker locks, cups for tea, and snacks.

My Project

We welcome new newcomer students (students who are new to the country and are learning English) to RMS throughout the year and these materials will help them to feel more welcome, comfortable and safe, even when no school staff speak their home language.

Students are often very nervous when they start at school- it's a chaotic environment, a huge change from their previous school and life, and many students have experienced significant traumatic events.

These materials will help us be able to take care of our newest newcomers - to help them manage their stress and help them feel welcome in their new school. I look forward to being able to offer fidget objects for them to use during class, menstrual pads, snacks and hot tea when they need soothing. I also want to offer yoga activities to interested students to help them manage stress (I just finished yoga teacher training!). I also want to be able to lend combination locks to students who are concerned about their belongings being stolen from their lockers during PE, as this has happened before to students who cannot afford to purchase a lock. Finally, the laminator will allow me to hang informative, multilingual posters as well as student artwork and portraits in the hallways so that our newcomers feel represented here.
