I am a special education teacher in an inner city school in northern Kentucky. I adore working with these children, and hate to see the emotional struggles they suffer through.
100% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, we have a 20% transient population, 15% homeless, and a large number of students who have been exposed to a number of other traumas in their childhoods, including drugs, alcohol, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, and incarcerated parents.
My Project
Attending Trauma Informed Schools will allow me to use these interventions in crisis and everyday situations to better understand how to help my students.
Teaching in this school, I have encountered a lot of students with heartbreaking stories; some students have been abused, or neglected, other students have had parents arrested in front of them, others have faced other traumas we couldn't imagine.
This training will allow me to improve my understanding of trauma informed care, and gain additional strategies to improve behavior, engagements, relationships, stress tolerance, educational outcomes, trauma-informed assessments, and brain-based interventions to increase understanding and coping skills.
