Helping My Students Develop a Love For Reading

My project needs 74 leveled readers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Watts's classroom raised $776

This project is fully funded

I am a first grade teacher. I am a teacher at James Russell Lowell IPS #51, an inner city school in Indianapolis, IN. I enjoy teaching first grade because I am able to make a huge impression in the lives of my students. Their minds are young and tender and they are ready to soak up all they can learn. As a teacher, I want my students to become excellent readers. I want my students to have a love for reading and to know that reading can take them anywhere. First grade is one of the most important grades, when it comes to teaching a child to learn to read. It is fundamental for children to know how to read to live in this society. Reading is all across the curriculum. You need to know how to read for every subject area in school and when you go out into the world. People need to know how to read street signs and names on buildings, and other various places. Reading is a major part of my teaching in first grade and I want my students leaving my class knowing how to read on or above grade level with comprehension and have a love for reading. I read to my students everyday and there is a time set aside for them to read themselves as well. I am writing this proposal because I want my students to be exposed to a variety of wonderful books: fiction, non-fiction, and different genres. Some of the books are story classics that have been read years ago and for many years to come. Please help give my students a chance to be exposed to the wonderful world of books and reading.
