Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching ESL students with little resources is a challenging job. I would like to give my students all the help they need in order to make them successful and to improve their self-esteem. I would like for them to have access to more literature in their first language (Spanish). I know that these students will benefit tremendously if their first language is taken into consideration before planning lessons in any subject area. Scaffolding learning based in their knowledge of the world makes their understanding easier; and, as a result, students will score better in state-mandated tests.
I teach English as a Second Language in two different grades in my school, serving approximately 46 students in second and fifth grade. My school is a Title 1 school which has a constantly growing ESL population. A great number of these students receive free lunch. There are three more ESL teachers who work with Hispanic students in the remaining grade levels.
The material I would like to acquire for the ESL students in my school are reading materials - either in Spanish or in both Spanish and English. Approximately 350 students will benefit from these materials. This number could increase if the Spanish teachers also use the materials in their daily instruction. In that case, we would serve more than 700 students.
Having these reading materials available to all the students in our school will promote better readers and better achievers in our school and (in the near future) better citizens in our community.
