Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school, which sits on the edge of a coastal town in California, has a student population that largely consists of children of color and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, family units, and socioeconomic standings, which lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, individualized, extracurricular education that they deserve.

My goal is to create a curriculum that is relevant, and individualized for my students.

I personally teach the upper levels of ELD which means my students are in my class for two periods a day. The longer class block allows more time to develop the students' perspective and interests through Reader's and Writer's Workshop.

My Project

Many students struggle with sitting for an extended period of time and have to find creative ways to release that energy. I have tried allowing students to pace in the back, stand by their seats, giving students odd jobs etc., but there are still some students who cannot control their legs and feet! I looked online for educational tools like these bands, but everything was almost $50 a desk!

Thats when I went into a classroom with exercise bands around the bottom of the desks.

It is so obvious, but so perfect! The idea is that one exercise band would go around the two legs of the desk, stretching across. The students can rest their feet on the band, push on it, or pull on it with their feet. My 7th graders can get their feet off of their complaining partner's desk and start movin' and groovin'!

This small project will allow students to release some of their energy and allow them to focus on learning.
