Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a wonderful school in Los Angeles County. I teach where majority of my students are Latino and are from low income family. I am fortunate enough to work in a district where students are provided with free breakfast and lunch. The district also provides free after school program where half of my students receive free snacks and are provided with assistance with their homework.
As a primary teacher who has been teaching for over twenty years, many of my lessons involve hands on activities where students have opportunities to work closely with their peers.
They practice working with their peers (in pairs or in small groups), they learn to share their ideas as they learn to become good listeners and learn to share their knowledge with one another. I want my students to be independent and gain the skills necessary for use in the future.
My Project
My students have been learning about our planet Earth. They have been learning about the different types of clouds, the water cycle, different kinds of weather, the phases of the moon, the sun, and the planets. All these lessons involve hands on activities where students are constantly cutting and pasting things as they learn about the planet they are living in.
As students participate in various activities, we are always short on our supplies.
Students are having to wait to share scissors and glues. They don't have enough markers and crayons as they don't have all the colors needed to finish their work. And even though my school provides the items, we use them more than what the school offers as my students are constantly participating on hands on activities.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
