Helping Kids Become Better Citizens Through Better Reading

Help me give my students this fantastic book that will teach them to look closely at nonfiction text in a world where they are bombarded by social media and biased information.

My Students

I currently teach AP Language at a high tech high school in Central Florida. At my school, an inquiry-driven, project-based STEM magnet school, we develop students who believe the world can be a better place and that they can be the ones to make it happen. My students are high performing students with big goals in life. They are each on one of three tracks: Bio-design, Engineering, or Cybersecurity. These students are working in a project based school where their end products are shared, celebrated, and displayed. They develop products like bridges, robots, 3D poetry models, literary analysis videos, physics mobiles and books recreated in great detail in Minecraft.

My students are the kind of kids who will surprise you, every time you give them freedom to think and create.

This project will help me provide them a tool to be more careful and deliberate thinkers as they go into the world to make a difference.

My Project

As part of my AP curriculum, I would like to incorporate Thomas Foster's book, Reading Nonfiction Like a Professor into our classwork. We will read the book throughout the year, breaking down sections as they apply to the AP curriculum.

It is incredibly critical that today’s students learn to read nonfiction with a discerning mind.

How to Read Nonfiction Like a Professor will help students to learn more careful, more attentive, more aware reading. The tools in this book can help young adults make good decisions for the rest of their lives.
