We have many elementary school Katrina Kids at our school. I am a guidance counselor and I counsel these students on a regular basis. I also go into all classrooms every week to teach "character education". I teach kids how to identify bullies. I'm requested videos which help viewers identify various types of bullying, appreciate how the targets of bullying feel, and understand what kids really think about bullies. The programs show kids that bystanders can make a difference. Children will learn that feeling sorry for kids who are teased is not enough. By seeing bullying through the eyes of children who are sensitive and silent, students learn that even one small voice can make a difference and help to stop the cycle of bullying. The materials also include: Facilitator's guides, student booklets and worksheets, posters, workbooks, stickers, as well as books which address this issue. As I stated earlier, I go to every classroom and "counsel" all students K-6. Our school has approximately 550 students, many of them Katrina evacuees. Life's challenges are hard enough for a child without having a harassing bully.
