This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am blessed to work in a middle school with such diversity. We are like a miniature United Nations. Learning and sharing our cultures is where our most valuable learning takes place. My students come from low economic backgrounds and over 60% of the students get free or reduced-price lunch. Many educational opportunities are lost due to lack of funding, but we do our best to provide as many as possible. The Humane Society Helpers program will allow my students to share their love of animals and teach the value of giving back to their community.

My Project

My students will visit our local animal shelter. They will receive a guided tour by one of the shelter volunteers. Next, they will participate in a workshop to learn about the day to day function of the shelter. Our goal is to help spread the word about the beautiful dogs and cats that need a forever home. Many of my students will go on to become volunteers at the shelter. Back at school, the students will create a collection drive for items needed at the shelter. Once collected, we will deliver them and help The animals to be more comfortable.
