"We must help the child to liberate himself from his defects without making him feel his weakness." - Maria Montessori
This quote from this wise woman is something that I repeat to myself each day that I am in the classroom. I am a first grade teacher in a high-need, high-risk charter school in Illinois. My school just completed its first year in existence and consists of 8 classes of each grade level (K-2). Prior to this year, and the opening of my school, the majority of my students attended our sister school for K. This sister school was a K-12 charter school with many struggles of its own. My students who attended this school were unfortunately prematurely exposed to a myriad of happenings, behaviors, and practices that they were unable to fully process given their age. This past year we spent several hours a week in our classroom redeveloping a true sense of culture and citizenship.
When our students entered our classroom on the first day of school, it was apparent immediately that there was a wide range of levels in each classroom and in some cases a very large achievement gap. Some students were on level while others were unable to identify letters, sounds, or in some cases basic colors and shapes. Given the student teacher ratio (28:1) , it was a challenge to get much one on one time with those few high-risk struggling students. It was an obstacle to keep these students engaged in whole group classwork that was challenging for them, but equally challenging to engage them in work on their independent level since it was basic alphabet repetition.
My students need an Interactive Learning System and the accompanying CD&'s to be able to continue to work at their independent level at all times regardless of the level of the majority of the class. The use of the Interactive Radius Reader will allow for my struggling students to receive the interactive repetition and reinforcement of the essential skills needed to become fluent readers while not feeling like they are "weak readers". These interactive systems are engaging and empowering as the student is able to take the drivers seat in his/her own learning process.
As a first grade teacher I know all too well that early intervention is critical in the success of each of my students. When I think about the prospect of my students' future given the proper tools, education, and work ethic, I fully understand the importance of making everyday count for every student now. With your help we can ensure that each child, regardless of their circumstance, has a chance for a bright and fulfilling future through the empowerment of literacy.
