"We must help the child to liberate himself from his defects without making him feel his weakness." - Maria Montessori This quote from this wise woman is something that I repeat to myself each day that I am in the classroom. I am a first grade teacher in a high-need, high-risk charter school in Illinois. My school just completed its first year in existence and consists of 8 classes of each grade level (K-2). Prior to this year, and the opening of my school, the majority of my students attended our sister school for K. This sister school was a K-12 charter school with many struggles of its own. My students who attended this school were unfortunately prematurely exposed to a myriad of happenings, behaviors, and practices that they were unable to fully process given their age. This past year we spent several hours a week in our classroom redeveloping a true sense of culture and citizenship.
