My Students
Can you imagine not understanding the teacher in front of the classroom? How is it possible to learn a new language and new subjects?
These are the ESL students. They do not know English, and not able to understand/communicate with the teacher.
These are my students...
My students attend an overcrowded middle school in NY, with about 1400 students.
Our school is well organized and truly is a family. We make every effort to help our students succeed.
My students are mostly ESL. I teach 6th and 8th grade. They are in my Science class with native English speakers. It is very difficult for the students to understand most of the material. Some of these students also come from homes that are impoverished. They do not have a computer, Internet access, or even books/basic school supplies.
My ESL students are hard workers, respectful and overly grateful for the help and understanding that I can give as a teacher. Their determination and dedication in my Science class has been unwavering and I hope to continue that trend.
The ESL students work especially hard to hand in projects and papers that help them achieve good grades. They always hand in projects on time. With a little more guidance, their projects would be even better.
My Project
These resources are vital to any classroom.
The wireless printer would allow students to print their notes, projects and diagrams in their native language from the English versions that are on the classroom laptop. Since many do not have access to a computer at home it would also be a teaching tool in how to use technology.
The USB drive would save student work that is completed, or currently being worked on through the school year. Students tend to lose things and this would allow them secure delivery of projects to me, as well as time to edit, create and save their final projects.
Both items would make learning Science for my students much easier. It would give the students more confidence in learning Science when they have access to their lessons in their native language.
The 8th grade Science Exit project is required for every student to complete, even the ESL students. These materials would make completing this project possible.
The success of my students comes from how well prepared I am as their teacher and the ways I can get them to learn... whether its through PowerPoint, a virtual lab or a game of Genetics Jeopardy... I want them to think, creatively and intelligently about the world around them.
Pure success is when the ESL students learn new words and use them...
Their success in school makes my every day of teaching worth it...
