This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are part of a larger school that has a innovative dual immersion program. Through grants students leave here and can continue their bilingual education through middle and high school. I teach intensive intervention for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, who are having trouble in one or more areas of classroom learning. My goal is to expose students to opportunities to read a multitude of different writing. Exposure to reading daily is essential to building verbal ability. Studies have shown readers become better writers. Writing is an area in which I specialize in here. We are as a school fast approaching having ten percent of our students with Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).

The optimum exposure for elementary students is a million words a year. I want to give them the chance to do this. In talking to librarians and other specialists in reading the current trend is exposure to reading through graphic novels.

My Project

In choosing graphic novels, my goal is getting my students to read stories that can teach a sense of adventure, cooperation, and social coping mechanisms. Some of the stories I am focusing on are classical literature, such as Louisa May Alcott, Jack London, and Robert Louis Stevenson (the last two authors are closely tied to the area). Through my own library and friends I have some of the novels as written. I am hoping that by presenting some of these stories in graphic format will pique their interest to read the stories in a traditional novel format.
