My students are inquisitive, creative, and motivated to absorb experiences and learning. They arrive to the classroom with a rich cultural history.
Many are refugees, having spent some or all of their lives in refugee camps or locations exposed to war, violence, natural disaster, and instability.
Their school histories are often characterized by transitions, interruptions, or little to no opportunities to safely attend. All of my students are English-language learners in beginning phases. They genuinely demonstrate gratitude and desire to understand and express, connect with adults and peers, and contribute to our community.
Our school is situated directly outside a large urban site and is considered a high-poverty area. 85% of the attending students are high needs as determined by the state. The student body is large and ethnically diverse with 60% speaking a native language other than English.
My project will help students that need work on their reading, language, fine motor and organizational skills. Many of our students are second language students and many of our second language students are refugees. Some students have little to no public education and are not familiar with using resources in the public schools. My goal is to give them an equal opportunity in learning. The magnetic blocks will help them at indoor recess while working on their fine motor skills. The costume fingers will be used while in reading group. These costume fingers help readers with directionality and one to one correspondence. The fluency phones allow readers to hear their fluency and help them become a fluent reader. Sharpeners are essential in the classroom. Without them, we could not have sharpened pencils to work with. At last, a storage cart. With this cart, students will be able to organize their reading materials. These organizational skills have a real-life purpose. Thank you for your donation! What a blessing!
