Helping Disadvantaged Students to Build Reading Stamina

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our school we have extended hours; children arrive at 8:05am and leave at 3:15pm. Their lunch is at 11am so at the end of the day my students are hungry. All my students receive free breakfast and lunch. They do not bring snacks from home to school.
Most of my students had to endure traumatic experiences before starting school.
They all come from low-income households and 85% of my students work below grade level. These students started school with a lack of exposure to print, oral language, and fun experiences that every child should have.
I would like to offer snacks at the end of the day to help students to persevere in their reading. For a child who works below grade level, reading independently might be a challenge. Struggling readers have difficulty focusing and reading independently for 5-15 minutes of time without being distracted or without distracting others. Reading stamina is something that school can help students develop.
It is not easy to learn grade content when you are two years below. Positive reinforcements can help students to stay on track and keep believing in themselves. Small steps can lead to a full journey.
